Terror Management Theory and Culture
by Arran James
Here culture is no longer in contradiction with nature. Rather, culture is little else than a series of coping mechanisms for human existence recoiling from the knowledge of its catastrophic condition. As such TMT is the only psychological theory that fully comprehends human societies as organised around the principle of a silent coalition against death. It is precisely this coalition which makes life the most intimately important problem for humans; it is why in the absence of an existentialism we still ask existential questions. Impossible to accept death, it is nonetheless equally impossible to truly affirm life.
